I have always kept an eye on what the guys over at Magic Lantern have been doing, but they just released a new firmware version (v2.3) that really caught my attention. The new version 2.3 adds some great timelapse related features to its functionality. With Magic Lantern v2.3 you now have a built in intervalometer, automatic bulb ramping, automatic ISO ramping, automatic focus racking, and many more amazing and useful timelapse features.

I started doing some simple tests of the new firmware about a week ago to see if it worked as advertised. The first test was an automatic bulb/ISO ramping test shot. Operationally everything worked perfectly without any issues, but the resulting footage had a lot of flicker in it. I ran the shot through GBDeflicker in After Effects to see if it could remove it, so the shot I posted is not straight out of the camera. There does not seem to be any information or tutorials on how to use these new timelapse features and how to set everything up correctly, so this test me just sort of guessing how to set it up.

Overall I think it worked out well, except the flicker, but I think with a little more trial and error testing i’ll be able to get things dialed in properly. I’m excited to get back out there and start testing again! The new Magic Lantern v2.3 is looking very promising not only for timelapse but also the hundreds of other awesome features the firmware adds.
